:: 12 Days on the Road
It's unclear just who Noel Monk offended to be given the job of overseeing the Sex Pistols' first and last tour of America; in his recounting, the 12-day jaunt consists of frequent open warfare between the band and Southern audiences who seem to have been handpicked for their redneck credentials. The antics of Sid Vicious, with his bouts of heroin abuse and self-mutilation (challenged in a diner to a macho display of bravado by a Texas cowboy who stubs a cigarette out on his own arm, Vicious cuts a deep gash in his own hand and carries on eating as blood drips over his eggs), form a constant undercurrent to the turmoil. Half the band starts flying to shows to avoid the other half, blood and sputum flow, and violence, controversy, and outrage are all in a day's work. From its inauspicious and surreal start in an Atlanta shopping mall, to Johnny Rotten's famous last words at the Pistols' last gig in San Francisco ('Ever get the feeling you've been cheated...?), 12 DAYS ON THE ROAD charts the precipitous end of a band in full flameout mode.
